Just recently, this years recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was revealed.

It goes to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for the development of lithium-ion batteries.

We asked professor Daniel Brandell of the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre a few questions about the 2019 Nobel Prize winners.

What kind of impact has their research had on our society?

"Massive impact, their collective research laid the foundations for the lithium-ion battery which is used in almost every modern portable device. Without their research, electric vehicles would have been useless."

And on your research here at Ångström?

"Our research at ÅABC was first built upon the cathode research made by John B. Goodenough, when crystallography researchers first got interested in this category of materials. This interest then laid the foundation for the battery group we have today.

This Nobel Prize also further amplifies the relevance and position of battery research. It's great that the Nobel committee highlights that this is highly advanced material chemistry research."

Does anyone at ÅABC have any connections to the recipients?

"We know all three from previous encounters. Akira Yoshino has had lectures at the Ångström Laboratory in the past, John B. Goodenough has been an active researcher in batteries for many years and thus interacted with us at conferences and M. Stanley Whittingham has been an opponent at a dissertation here at the Ångström lab".

Professor Kristina Edström was also present as an expert at the announcement at the Swedish Academy of Sciences.
