A new method for extracting hydrogen from air has been discovered by Gustav Berggren's research group within the Molecular Biomimetics research programme at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström, Uppsala University, in collaboration with other researchers from Australia and UK, among others. The discovery could reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The research results have been published in Nature.

"Hydrogen metabolism has classically been associated with organisms in special oxygen-poor environments rich in hydrogen such as wetlands. In recent years, however, the importance of hydrogen in oxygen-rich environments has begun to be noticed. Before this report, however, it had not been investigated how microorganisms can assimilate the trace amounts of hydrogen gas we have in the atmosphere, or live on air if you want to express yourself more colorfully, says Gustav Berggren, lecturer and research group leader at Uppsala University."
