Projects in solar cells and virus control awarded by UU Innovation

2022-12-19

Two different projects within the Section of Chemistry have recently been awarded with the "Attractive Innovation Project 2022" award by Uppsala University Innovation (UU Innovation): It concerns a method for manufacturing solar cell modules where perovskite solar cells are linked together in an efficient way, and a cell-penetrating peptide that can be used to fight viral diseases. The researchers behind these projects are Prof. Gerrit Boschloo and Prof. Ylva Ivarsson.

The "Attractive Inovation Project" award is given to innovative projects and start-up companies started by researchers at Uppsala University, who received support from UU Innovation at an early stage and then received external grants that further strengthened the development opportunities.

Manufacturing method for stable perovskite solar cells

Gerrit Boschloo with the award The material perovskite has received attention for its possibilities to produce light, flexible and cheaper solar cells. Prof. Gerrit Boschloo, within the research programme Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström, has received the "Attractive Innovation Project" award for his method of manufacturing solar cell modules where perovskite solar cells are connected together in an efficient way. A patent has been sought for the method and the application has been transferred to a company for further development and commercialisation.

Cell-penetrating peptide against viral disease

Ylva Ivarsson and Anna Överby WernstedtProf. Ylva Ivarsson, at the research programme for Biochemistry at the Department of Chemistry – BMC, has received the "Attractive Innovation Project" award due to the fact that she, together with Prof. Anna Överby Wernstedt, Umeå University, and Prof. Jakob Nilsson, at the University of Copenhagen, has developed a peptide that can penetrate cell membranes and be transported into cells, thereby inhibiting diseases caused by viruses - for instance Covid-19. To give the technology the best possible conditions to benefit, the team has transferred the rights to a partner who is responsible for identifying companies that want to take over the innovation project, such as pharmaceutical companies. The team has an option for future income from a commercialisation.
