Eliminating the bottlenecks for the use of lithium-sulfur batteries

2022-03-30

Daniel BrandellLithium-sulfur is a type of battery that could challenge the Lithium-ion battery as more energy can be stored, but which currently does not measure up due to the battery's short lifespan. Now, Prof. Daniel Brandell's research group, within the research programme for Structural Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström, together with researchers from Scania and the Laue-Langevin Institute, has succeeded in identifying some of the bottlenecks.

In addition to being able to store more energy, the lithium-sulfur battery is both cheaper and uses more environmentally friendly materials than lithium-ion batteries. On top of that, they work well even at very low temperatures. The biggest obstacles today are energy losses and their short lifespan.

The research team has now mapped out what limits the battery's performance and published it in a new scientific article in the journal Chem.
