ABSTRACT 

Synthesis and Structural Chemistry of Li-rich Layered Transition Metal Oxides

Li-rich layered transition metal oxides (LR-TMOs) are intensively researched as potential positive electrode (cathode) materials for future Li-ion batteries. For this project, the synthesis-property relationships in LR-TMOs are investigated. In the first work, the influence of synthesis routes on the crystallography, morphology and electrochemistry of Li2MnO3 is studied. Simulation and refinement of stacking-faulted structure models against X-ray and neutron diffraction data, electron microscopy, thermal analysis with in situ diffraction and galvanostatic cycling were used to study the differences in the properties. In the next project, the effect of synthesis routes on the bulk crystallographic structure of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 are explored through a combination of crystallographic, magnetic and spectroscopic methods.
