Helices Loaded with Reactive Halogen Cations

Molecular helices are interesting structures. Helices serve many different functions in biological chemistry and have also been shown to be useful in organic synthesis for chiral induction, which is to say that helices can control the geometry of the product molecules of a reaction. Halogens generally tend to form negatively charged anions. One of the interesting aspects of our research is that, in contrast to this, we work with positively charged halogens. In our 2019 paper in Angewandte, we reported helices which bind to positively charged iodonium cations, which are located in the centre of the helix. The distance between iodonium cations within the helix is remarkably small (shorter than their atomic diameter). The helical complexes are capable of reacting with carbon-carbon double bonds in order to produce products that contain carbon-iodine bonds. This is important because halogen functionalities such as iodine serve as indispensable handles for further molecular synthesis and halogens also occur in many useful molecules such as natural products, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
