Organic batteries
The increasing use of batteries in the energy system puts large strain on the natural resources, and the prizes of many key materials for batteries are also rising rapidly. Moreover, production and recycling of batteries are associated with high energy consumption and large environmental impact. These problems are associated with the fact that the active materials in a battery are inorganic. We work on developing organic active material counterparts, primarily in the form of organic lithium and sodium salts.
Much research is necessary in order for these to operate in a well-functioning battery system, but if successful, considerably more sustainable batteries can be constructed. Precursors from biomass can be used for the battery materials, and the recycling can be done using non-toxic chemicals and low energy consumption.
