Oommen Varghese

The focus of my research is to realize the transformative power of Chemistry at the interface between Cell and Molecular Biology and Medicine. Our research interests are in the interdisciplinary fields that combine synthetic organic chemistry with biomolecular chemistry and medicine. Specifically, we develop functional biomaterials for regenerative medicine application and design oligonucleotide drugs and targeted delivery formulations for tissue regeneration and anticancer therapy.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Nithiyanandan Krishnan

Nithiyanandan Krishnan

Nithiyanandan Krishnan completed his PhD at the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) Tiruvananthapuram in 2019. He joined Varghese lab as a Marie-Curie postdoctoral research fellow in 2021. His project includes synthesis and delivery of chemically modified functional nucleic acids to improve the RNA interference therapy.

Partha Laskar

Partha completed his Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP), India in Chemistry. He later pursued his postdoctoral study at SIPBS, University of Strathclyde, UK, and School of Medicine, University of Texas RGV, USA. He joined Varghese’s lab as a postdoctoral research fellow in 2022. His project includes the synthesis of multimodal delivery systems and imaging of intracellular transport of chemically modified functional nucleic acids to improve RNA interference therapy. Additionally, he initiates the following projects-(i) the use of high-throughput techniques to improve RNAi therapy and (ii) in vitro polymerization technique.

Mahsa Jamadi

Mahsa Jamadi

Mahsa completed her bachelor’s in Mechanical engineering at Yazd University, Iran, and continued to pursue a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Amirkabir University of Technology. Then, she started her Ph.D. in Tissue engineering at the National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NIGEB). During her Ph.D., Mahsa joined the Khademhosseini lab at Harvard-MIT Health Science and Technology, USA. Afterward, she came to Macromolecular Chemistry at Uppsala University, to Samanta’s group, and joined the Varghese Group in September 2022. Her project involves biomaterials and nucleic acid research, specifically in cell bioengineering, 3D matrix development, and in vivo studies.
