Fredrik Lindgren, Si negative electrodes for Li-ion batteries: Aging mechanism studies by electrochemistry and photoelectron spectroscopy
Abstract: This thesis is focusing on the challenges when using Si as a possible new negative electrode material in Li-ion batteries. The overall aim is to contribute to a general understanding of the processes in the Si electrode, to identify aging mechanisms, and to evaluate how they influence the cycling performance. Another objective is to investigate how photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) can be used to analyze these mechanisms.
LiPF6 based electrolytes are aggressive towards the oxide layer present at the surface of the Si particles. With the use of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as an electrolyte additive the cycling performance is improved, but the oxide layer is still affected. A recently developed salt, lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide (LiTDI), is shown not to have any detrimental effects on the oxide. The SEI with FEC [...]
Sara Munktell, Bipolar electrochemistry for high throughput screening applications
Abstract: Bipolar electrochemistry is an interesting concept for high throughput screening techniques due to the ability to induce gradients in a range of materials and their properties, such as composition, particle size, or dopant levels, among many others. One of the key advantages of the method is the ability to test, create or modify materials without the need for a direct electrical connection. In this thesis, the viability of this method has been explored for a range of possible applications, such as metal recycling, nanoparticle modification and corrosion analysis.
In the initial part of the work a process to electrodeposit gradients in metal composition was evaluated, with a view to applying the technique to the extraction and recycling of metals from fly ash. Compositional gradients in the [...]
David Rehnlund, "Insights into Electrochemical Energy Storage by use of Nanostructured Electrodes"
Abstract: Template-assisted electrodeposition is a powerful technique for fabricating complex nanostructured electrodes. Through the use of pulsed-electrodeposition nanostructured electrodes of Al, Cu and Sn have been realised and subsequently coated electrochemically with V2O5, MnxO, Li, Cu2O and a polymer electrolyte. Nanorods with a multi-layered Cu2O/Cu structure have likewise been produced through electrodeposition. Nanostructured electrodes are ideal for studying electrochemical energy storage and have as such been used to investigate the electrochemistry of conversion and alloying reactions in detail.
Key properties of the Cu2O conversion reaction were found to be dependent on the particle size. Prolonged cycling was seen to induce an electrochemical milling process which [...]
Adam Sobkowiak, "LiFeSO4F as a Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Synthesis, Structure, and Function"
Abstract: In this thesis, two recently discovered polymorphs of LiFeSO4F, adopting a tavorite- and triplite-type structure, were investigated as potential candidates for use as cathode materials in Li-ion batteries. The studies aimed at enriching the fundamental understanding of the synthetic preparations, structural properties, and electrochemical functionality of these materials.
By in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), the formation mechanism of the tavorite-type LiFeSO4F was followed starting from two different sets of precursors, FeSO4∙H2O + LiF, and Li2SO4 + FeF2. [...]
