Experience chemistry at the SciFest science festival!

The science festival SciFest is back in Uppsala! There will be a wide range of exciting experiments, lectures and try-on activities for the whole family. Researchers from both of the chemistry departments (at Ångström and BMC) will be on site to show and explain our research.

Scifest is a science festival that takes place at 09:00-16:00 hrs for three days at the end of September; 21, 22 and 23 September. The first two days are open to schools, but on Saturday 23 September everyone is welcome!

The day is aimed at curious people of all ages. The festival awakens a thirst for knowledge and spreads the joy of discovery. Come and give your brain cells stimulation and become a little wiser!

This is what we will be presenting from chemistry:

CHEMISTRY SHOW - A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE!

Get ready for an enchanting journey into the magical world of chemistry! Can fire be green? Or purple? And can a liquid listen to music? You will get answers to these questions and many more when five chemists from Uppsala University invite you to a cracking chemistry show.

VEGETABLE BATTERIES

How can potatoes help a calculator work? What happens when a smartphone is charged from an outlet? Come see us to find out! In this activity, participants build a battery using common vegetables and fruits. You can also learn what batteries that power cell phones and electric cars look like inside and how they work.

SOLAR CELLS - GIVE TODAY'S CHEAPEST ENERGY!

The most important energy source of the future is the sun. With the help of solar cells, you can convert sunlight directly into electricity. Did you know that solar cells are already the cheapest way to produce electricity on large parts of the globe? A quick switch to renewable energy sources is an important part in the fight against climate change. We will explore different aspects of solar cells: How do solar cells work? How do you connect solar cells to modules? How can you store solar energy?

CHEMISTRY IS FUN!

The best way to learn chemistry is through experiments, and the best way to inspire future chemists is through amazing experiments. We will present a number of experiments that demonstrate important chemical concepts in a fun way. But even more importantly, our demonstrations aim to inspire and arouse curiosity. We plan to show some classic experiments, even ones that are not performed very often.

DRAW A PHARMACEUTICAL MOLECULE!

Will we find a new exciting drug together? All participants will try to draw a pharmaceutical molecule that should fit into a protein. We will try to make a new molecule that can be used against pain and fever. At the end, we try to create a selected drug molecule in a computer and see if it can fit in the protein or not.

MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE - HOW DOES MASS SPECTROMETRY WORK?

Do you want to know how scientists can visualize the chemical composition of various tissue sections and therefore reveal the background of diseases? Do you want to paint some beautiful pictures with our special invisible ink, then turn into an imaging scientist/magician and make it all visible?

The complete program for the day can be found here: www.scifest.se/allmanheten/ (in Swedish).

Free entrance.

A warm welcome!
