Element of the month - Tantalum (Ta)

2019-06-10

This year it's 150 years ago that Dmítriy Ivánovich Mendeléyev first published the Periodic Law that would later become the periodic table. Unesco has decided to celebrate this by calling 2019 "International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements" (IYPT).

The fifth element is Tantalum (Ta) which was first discovered in 1802 by Uppsala University alumni Anders Ekeberg. Anders Ekeberg was an expert in Greek literature and therefore he named the element after Tantalus from Greek mythology.

Tantalum is mostly used in production of electronic components, mainly capacitors and some high-power resistors. Commonly used in cellphones, computers and cameras.
