Element of the month

2019-04-01

This year it's 150 years ago that Dmítriy Ivánovich Mendeléyev first published the Periodic Law that would later become the periodic table. Unesco has decided to celebrate this by calling 2019 "International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements" (IYPT).

The third element is Chlorine (Cl) which was first discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele during his studies of Manganese dioxide in 1774. The name Chlorine was coined by a british researcher called Humphry Davy who later on suggested Scheeles discovery is an element. Interesting to note is that Scheele was a Uppsala University alumni.

Most people might think of indoor swimming pools or cleaning when they hear the word Chlorine. But Chlorine itself is extremely toxic and its gas state has for example been used in chemical warfare.
